Serious PMS Rollercoaster I've posted about this before. I'm taking additional vitamins, excercise, stay away from chocolate, get plenty of rest and STILL I am having these wild mood swings, that I know are connected to my period. It doesn't matter that I'm aware of them, I still cannot control them, and it is making things very miserable for me. I can't not go to work for days each month, and I really don't want to start taking the pill at this point in my life. I never liked rollercoasters.

    :( You must be miserable. Have you talked to a naturopath? I've started taking It's helped me a lot for day-to-day winter depression, and it's helped to take the edge off my PMS depression. I agree if you go to a gp, they're going to slap you right on the pill. Maybe a naturopath will have dietary recommendations and supplements that will help?

    If you go to a naturapath, will you fill us in? I have some people in my life that deal with some intense pms and I would love to hear what other options are out there besides the pill. A friend of mine was given anti-depresents AND the pill. She's straight so the pill isn't a huge deal to her but she really doesn't like taking prozac even though it helps...

    The doc says............ I ed my doc in a fit of desperation. This isn't the first time we have discussed this, but this time (because she could see my state first hand) she took blood and initially suggested the pill. I really don't want to take that so, she suggested a short course of prozac for 4-5 days each month prior to my period. Anyone have any success, experience with this?     Hormone imbalances and thyroid disorders I have both, hormone imbalances and I am hypothyriod, and my PMS used to be so bad before I finally saw a GOOD endocrinologist. i went to many doctors and almost none of them will actually test you, and if they do they will say you are "close enough" and dont need to take anything. A long time ago some doctor tried to put me on birth control, but I know those pills are not good for you, and why would I be taking them if they made me feel sick, were bad for me, and I had x% chance of getting pregnant? So now I am on all natural hormone cream (if you want this instead of pills you have to ask the doctor before you see them if they prescribe them) and an all natural thyroid replacement and my life is MUCH better. My PMS is minor, I have less mood swings, I am more focused and alert, I have more energy and whoo hoo! So I would say find a good endocrinologist, please let me know if you want more information.

    OH, and make sure you are consuming enough iron I also get moody when my iron gets low, I started just taking double dose iron right before, during and after my period, and that helped that A nurse friend of mine told me to look in the inside of my lower eyelid. If it is white, instead of red, then it is an indicator that you are low on iron. For me this gets xX worse right before my period, and causes all sorts of problems. All of the other advice was good too, taking vitamins, eating a healthy diet, Omega x's.

    I've had good luck with extra calcium (both for pain and emotional symptoms). It seems to take about a month of taking the extra for it to kick in, but I notice a difference if I stop taking it. I also went to a chinese doc for accupunture and herbs (I'm perimenopausal). Did about x years of weekly accupunture and herbs. The symptoms went away and have stayed away for the last year without further treatment. I'm a believer in chinese medicine for this. Good luck!

    My experience - is similar to yours - except that I went to my primary care doc to ask about going on the pill to help control horrid horrid PMS - and she didn't like that option. Instead, she suggested the prozac-for-a-few-days, only-while-PMSing tactic as worth a try. She said: *it works totally differently for PMS than how it works for treating depression. For depression, it takes a few months to build up in your system and start working. For PMS, it's an immediate thing. *take it at the onset of PMS symptoms - x-x weeks before your cycle is due to start. I was worried about it, did some sleuthing (google and talking to folks with their own experience), and decided to try it for a cycle to. O. M. G. it worked really quickly, and my only regret? That I didn't seek help years ago. I tried a lot of dietary changes (cutting out virtually all sugar, iron, blood tests), and also EPO (evening primrose oil) supplements, none of which really did much. Now, I only take it for x-x days a cycle. As soon as I feel the "nutties" coming on (as I refer to them - where I think the entire world is idiotic and bothering the heck out of me), and it takes the edge off and makes me feel more "normal".
